Amethyst is purple and Citrine is yellow, everybody knows that. They are both Quartz and both structurally identical but the difference in colour between the two is due to the oxidisation of iron during formation, basically if you heat up Amethyst it changes colour and becomes a Citrine.
Very rarely this occurs naturally and the incredible stone Ametrine, sometimes called 'watermelon quartz', is conceived. Almost all Ametrine is mined in Bolivia.
